Battery question

Ok, after haveing issues with a off brand battery, I've decided to take a lot of people's advice and go with the steelership battery. Because the are to be one of the best. So I would like to make the new battery last as long as I can. I've been told to keep it on a trickle charger.

Now I ride my bike every day, and I have a trickle charger with a float on it to automatically shut it off. My question is, will it hurt the agm battery if I put it on the trickle charger every night ? Or should I only charge it like once or twice a week?

What are your thoughts on this.

Thanks in advance.

What brand of battery charger are you using?

If it is of the "Battery Tender" type, you can leave them plugged in all the time while parked without issue.

I see you mentioned that yours has a "float" to automatically shut it off, so it's probably of similar type. Some other common names for this type are:

Smart charger
Maintenance charger
Float charger
Battery maintainer

There are probably other names, but they all serve to keep your battery alive and active, without overcharging, while parked.

Some types of batteries require special chargers, but your AGM should be fine with any name-brand maintenance charger.

But, since you're riding it everyday, there's really no need to keep it on there every night--assuming that your bike's charging system is working as designed.

All the best,

Shane

It's a Schumacher battery charger, it's designed to shut off when it's charged and turn back on when it needs a charge.

I've got two of those cooking out in the garage right now on bikes for the winter.

You're good to go!

Just leave it plugged in all the time. That's what those chargers are designed for. I have 7 going right now.

Wow 7! I just bought one of these chargers and they are really nice. You should be fine just as the others have said. These Schumacher chargers/maintainers are nice but I don't know how much I trust their read-outs on the displays of the battery charge %.
