Unhappy Time sert

I am installing Time Serts in my striped spark plug holes on a sporty. The instructions say top dead center for the piston. I was curious if it can be done at the bottom of the compression stroke as the valves are still closed, and I can get in there with a vacuum hose and a scope to see if there is any bits of metal left. Pulled the plugs and tried to do a compression check a little to soon I suppose.

Wow, I'd demand a membership refund.....
Maybe those 35 people haven't done what you're trying to do????

Personally, I would pull the heads off, rather than risking possible damage from missed debris that could hide at the piston edges.

For sure, pull the heads and do it the right way. Chances of debris left behind are very high. Why risk causing further damage. I've used scopes to look into cylinders and I have never been able to see the whole area properly and much less fine debris.

you can do it on the bike, put the piston in the down position, stuff a long skinny rag in the hole and move the piston back up until the rag fills the area at the top of the cylinder. do your rethreading and suck up the chips on top of the rag in the hole (if you put grease on the tap most of the chips will stick to the tap..turn the piston down some and pull out the rag with a pair of surgical forceps or needle nose pliers...it will work fine...personally I would use a helicoil though, but that is just me...
