Default Kickstand Issue

I was driving home the other night and my kickstand rattled loose and flew off. I was able to find the kickstand and spring in the road. Does anyone know what type of bolt and washer setup was originally on there?

It's not a bolt. It's a clevis pin with a cotter pin and no washers. On the stand if they did not fall off, you will need two bushings that work with the clevis pin.

It happened to me too. 'Cept my jiffy stand is still somewhere on the 60 freeway. What happened is the hole that the clevis pin goes through wore bad enough for the pin to slide right thru. I used a 3/8" nylock nut and bolt and washers, bolt has the same o.d. as the clevis. Lowes also has some thin wall 3/8" sleeves that fit perfect to take up the slop from the worn frame hole and its softer metal so it will wear instead of the frame. I just check it every time I do a 5k service. The penny trick with the spring makes it easy.

stock #s

554 cotter pin
50003-89b clevis pin
53158-98 bushing

this setup fits all 1200 and 883 of that year

shove pennies in the spring coils - makes the spring stay stretched, easy removal and installation
google it

When I lowered my bike last week I had to install a shorter kick stand.
I wrestled with that damned spring for several minutes.

I will NOT forget "the penny trick".

With some stands, with the pressure off of it (bike up straight) and the removal of the locking mechanism you can slant it to the front of the bike and that will relieve the spring tension for removal and installation of the spring. Very useful and safe technique for when you want to do complete maintenance (cleaning) of the stand. This will not apply to all HD stands, but its good to know.

Not a Sportster, but some good tips that could be used:
