I believe most women prefer the low seat access of the soft tails. The Sportster is a taller bike and it's appeal (at least for me) is the more aggressive style of riding and leaner cornering it supports and encourages. Most (but not all) women can't flat foot a Sportster, and are not as interested in its agility and faster acceleration.

Mrs B rides ours. Strictly speaking she owns it, but we both ride it. We'll be going to France soon for a few days, she on the Sporty solo, me on the Buell, if you want to pop over for the spectacle! We also have EveHD, one of our HDF mods, or Moderatress and at least a couple of other Sporty ladies. Have you never popped into the Queens section of HDF?!

This has been my experience from working as a sales person in a Harley-Davidson shop...
Dude rides a Harley and his wife starts to show interest in wanting her own bike.
They buy her a Sportster because they are lighter and smaller.
Woman loves the bike and rides the **** out of it. Puts on lots of miles.
The next year other HD riders and men in her life talk her into to trading "up" to a Softtail.
Softtail sits in garage collecting dust because the appeal of riding a 700+ lbs. motorcycle fades.
