Could it be the battery?
Just purchased a 2012 883 SuperLow for my wife with only 1,500mi. on it. And other then the foward controls which was a huge plus, there id also a ser of Vance & Hynes slip ons and thats it.
Waiting on an FP3 for DK Customs. Already have their Outlaw air filter but waitin on the install till the controller arrives. So just runnin the V&H slip-ons with the stick filter. What's been happening on occasions is during idling after its been running, the idle will suddenly slow down significantly to what seems like below 900rpm (no tack) and then the engine and battery light comes on. Sounds like the motor wants to stall at times but hasn't yet. Then once I'm going again, the warning litghts go off till I come to a stop again, or in slow movin traffic. Now take into consideration among other things and realize the battery is the original battery and that makes it almost five years old and that the bike has sat fow a long time. Probably seen many limp battery revivals. Any idea what you think is goin on? Could be the air fuel mix also a possability? Thanks for any or all you might be able to help sith tryin to trouble shoot this one with me. |
Not the battery. I'd see and try to read error codes. Just wild guess, could be intake gaskets.

Thanks for the response Von.
Don't have a manual yet and haven't leaned how to do that yet. Nut why would you suspect those particular gaskets with a bike that is essentially new based on mileage? |
Rubber gaskets, they are known to expire in time (not miles). But it was just a guess. There is a sticky on this forum about error codes.

As for a manual, do get one asap - the factory service manual for your model year. Essential reading, with the added bonus of helping you out should you suffer from sleepless nights..... |
Did a little checkin on a sportste forum for other ideas and dug this up... http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/s....php?t=1511120

I have a working regulator that came off my bike when I upgraded to Cycle Electric. It can be yours for very reasonable price if you want it.

The engine and battery light coming on is not likely your problem, it's the result on the motor RPM dropping so low that the charging system can't keep up with the electrical load. Find and fix the cause of the RPM drop at idle and the lights won't come on. Check your diagnostic codes, there's a How To "Sticky" thread at the top of this section. |
Von thanks. Gonna check with my indy and see if the voltage reg is it.
Charley, also bring the idle issue up with him and see what he says. Thanks |
