Default Changing filter and not oil question...

Is it possible to swap out an oil filter with draining the oil on a Sportster?

I'm ordering a billet oil cleaner I was to swap for the stock filter but just did an oil change.

I was wondering if I remove the filter if the oil tank under the seat will completely drain through the oil filter fitting if it's removed.

Thanks

I don't believe the tank will drain.. You will lose some oil but it shouldn't be too much.

You won't have any problems at all. No need to add oil to the new filter, simply run the engine afterwards and check oil level as per your owners manual, adjusting level if necessary.

^^^Agree, But^^^

If it was me, I'd just wait until oil change time and do it all at once...less mess...IMO.

THIS - If you put a dry filter on a Sporty EVO motor, the motor will not have oil flow until the oil pump first fills the filter. It only takes a few seconds to pour ~4 oz. of oil into the filter before screwing it on.

That would be at the end of summer for as much as I'm able to ride.

My problem is that I put on Jagg oil cooler and at first, I put it on the normal way and the oil filter hit the motor mount.

The second time, I put it on upside down and snapped a bolt when I put the halves back together and ruined the back plate.

I had to order all new parts, so this time, I put in on upside down and got the correct torque specs they did not include in the directions.

Anyway, I got it all back together and thought I had enough clearance, but the engine moves around a lot more than I anticipated.

There is a wire with a plastic grommet that runs next to the oil filter that plugs into the front of the frame. The engine jumped around so much that the oil filter was hitting the grommet that held the wire and dented in the side of the oil filter.

I took the filter off this morning and popped out the grommet and cut it off the wire and then zip tied the wire to another wire that ran across the front of the engine a few inches below it.

And just for a little reassurance, I am ordering on of those reusable filter from DK because it looks like that are a smaller diameter which will give a little more clearance.

If it wasn't for that issue, I wouldn't mess with it until the next oil change.
