Got my 1994 Sportster w/1200 conversion 7 yrs. ago with 17k miles. Not a problem for all of that time, even the battery lasted. Until moving 4 months ago had to leave it at a shop because the battery finally died. Sat outside and even with our drought it rained a couple of times.

These guys put in the battery I bought and when I picked it up, it was idling fast and when I took off it sputtered badly then kicked back in and almost popped a wheelie! Thought it would warm up and go back to normal but what happened was every time I shut it upon restart attempt it would click a few times then finally start still running erratically. Now it only clicks, doesn't start at all.

Then, and now, when you hit the starter button it clicks and I believe the part that is clicking is a starter relay. Took the battery home to charge it and going to try again tonight. I remember a similar click soon after I got the bike years ago but I pushed on the battery and it never happened again till now.

Any ideas on what the problem could be?

 

my guess is the carb is dirty. pull it apart an clean it with carb cleaner. The click is prob a weak battery since it wasn't running right to charge the battery.
