There is nothing wrong with Sportster transmissions. They changed the gear cut when they dropped the trapdoor, I believe. Before that, the transmission was removable, now you have to take the entire motor apart. If the transmission wasn't that good, they would have kept the trapdoor system. They changed from a four speed to a five speed in 1991.

I had the same question when I bought my bike I was told the years also for the evo and when the sportster changed from carb to EFI , I also had a concern due to bad knees and back (can never give up two wheels and knees in te breeze) the years of a rubber mounted motor. That limited me to two years , the dealership I bought my 05 XL1200C at had a 06 XL883 also but it was EFI .
I can work on a carb so the choice for me was easy.

K Model: 1952-1956
Ironhead: 1957-1985
Evolution: 1986-Present
2007 was the first year of EFI for the Sportster. 2014 they went to CANbus wiring.
Transmission trap door eliminated in 2004 with the invent of the rubber mounted motor. 2006 introduced helical gears in the trans. along with revised cases to handle the side load. No real known issues with the trans. to worry about. Failures are few and far between.
