I am making a chopper and I am using a 1989 883 Sportster engine. I pulled the can cover off and found in the oil 2 round cylinder about 1" long by 1/4" diameter they appear to made of paper. One is straight and other is stubbed out on one end. The use I can see would be to stop up oil passages. If know what these are please let me know.

I see I had a error I pulled the timing cover not the can cover.

Someone put a cigarette in your oil tank at some point in time. Lucky you found it.

I never had either. I suppose I'm too trusting.

That flow chart is inaccurate for an Evolution XL. The oil goes from the pump straight to the oil filter and then to the engine.

Wasn't thinking about accuracy of chart as much as there being a website talking about trash in oil. Thanks for the correction.
Do you have any idea about how one would wind up behind OPs timing cover?

Perhaps some lazy mechanic dropped his cigarette, never found it, and buttoned up the case not even thinking it was inside the case, or gear case cover. That's an original problem for sure!!!!

It would have been ground up in the oil pump and caught by the filter on EVO bikes, although perhaps the 4 speeds have a slightly different oiling system than the 1991 and later bikes.

Was it inside the round (nosecone) ignition timing cover, or the valve gear case cover?

John
