Are you talking about a stock exhaust system or aftermarket? The stock system from model years 2004 up to and including 2013 are a direct fit. Why do you ask?

I bought the bike with a junk "custom made" exhaust an it sounds horrible don't have a lot of money right now for after market so I'm just gonna go back to stock for the mean time

You should be able to find a stock exhaust on here or Craig's list for a decent price, it you can also find slip ons or some Vance and Hines short shorts for 2 and change if you look.

When I bought slip ons for my '14 72, i noticed that most systems have two ranges for newer Sportsters: 2004-13 and 2014-17.

I'm not sure what changed in 2014, but my guess is you'd be safe w/ a stock or aftermarket setup from 2004-13.

You can check out the differences of stock systems on-line here. The later systems have a balance pipe which is integral with the front and rear pipes, the previous system has a balance pipe which links to each muffler, not the pipes. You are quite right - stick with the later set-up.

I have my stock exhaust with holes drilled in the baffle to make it sound a lil better. Took them off to put on some Python slip ons. They are just gathering dust. Available if you want them.
