Default Running lean after hammer 1250 basic conversion

Hey guys, a quick run down of what my issue is. I have an 01 883 that I just did the hammer 1250 basic conversion on. I kept stock heads and stock ignition (just retarded it a little). I put in a 45 pilot and 185 main, the bike HATED the 45, wouldn't stay running unless I was at 1/4 throttle and it was puking black smoke, even with the mixture screw at 2 turns out. I put the 42 pilot back in and it ran much better, except it's running lean (plugs are white) and it's popping and back firing on deceleration, even with the mixture screw about 5 turns out. I asked hammer and they had no idea what could be the issue, said they've never seen a bike not like the 45 pilot like mine did. Any one here have some advice of what may be going on? Thanks in advance

Where did you get the #45 jet from?
Did you check that the jet has a 45 stamped on it? (may need magnifying glass)

I got it straight from hammer. Yes it is stamped 45. I wonder if it could be defective? My plugs were black as could be with that 45 in.

If you have a "numbered" drill bit set, you can check it using a 45 bit. Other than that, consider ordering another 45.

You should have no problem with a 45 unless you have other issues.

And what are the possibilities of other issues?

That you've got carb body problems or some other issue dumping excess fuel in.

Also, plugs take a while to color properly. They need to be fully warmed up or they'll always look black, even on a lean mixture.

It just had me baffled that it runs lean with the 42, and not at all with the 45. I'd it possible I have a defective 45 jet?

Possibly, although with Hammer parts unlikely. I never used any of their jets so idk how they measure out. I've only found two reliable sources for jets, CVPerformance and jetsrus. Can't get accurate quality ones at the dealer or from those aftermarket Drag Specialties ones.

Have you cleaned out your carb passages?? Take out mix screw, pilot jet and blast it out with carb cleaner from the air bleed at the mouth. Check to make sure the "o" ring on the mix screw is not damaged, or one is not still down in the hole. Sounds like an idle circuit issue. Double check your intake seals if this is a new installation.

Just went and picked up a 45 from my local Harley dealership. I compared the 45 I got from hammer and the one I just got. The hole on the jet from hammer is about three times the size as the one I just got. Anyone ever had this issue? Possibly just a faulty jet, or do hammer jets run that much bigger?
