I'm considering buying a 1976 XL1000 project
There's a 1976 project for sale up on Craigslist right now, price seems right and I'm really looking to do an older ironhead build, think it's worth it?

verify the vin numbers and their locations first. Any title MUST go to the frame , engine numbers mean nothing unless there stolen
In NH all we need is a bill of sale to register a bike if that's what is so important about the title
The registration means nothing in today's world. And the same is almost as true when it comes to titles. What matters, during an inspection or simple traffic stop, are the frame numbers. The last thing you want to do is take on a 'project' with a bad history.
If the frame neck has "1966XLCH 1234" it`s a bogus number and confiscated
If the engine has "1966XLCH 1234 stamped on the right side, its bogus and confiscated Up to 1969(1970?) Sportsters title by the engine, 1971(1970?) and later title by the frame vin |
Ad says it has matching frame and motor numbers
And who inspects their choppers???
You asked us if "it was worth buying". We've tried to tell you that it isn't worth buying if it's stolen.
Dwayne picked up an 86 Ironhead, running, for a trade...fortuitous circumstances occurred and he has less than $1k in the purchase price.
You can see pics and his build report here- https://www.hdforums.com/forum/sport...oto-heavy.html |

Mismatched numbers is reason numero uno to get them to start looking a lot deeper. It's no bueno when the 5-0 starts digging. |
