layers, modular helmet, windshield, engine guard chaps, never believed in heated gear but the older i get the more I'm thinking about getting some

I'm good down to 32*F or so. IMO, for a base layer Cycle Gear's Freeze Out is the best. I can ride in those temps with a pair of Freeze Out long johns, jeans, and leather chaps below the waist. On top, a Freeze Out long sleeve 'shirt' over a couple of long sleeve t-shirts, and a sweatshirt under a jacket. As some have said, layers are the key.

A full face modular helmet, a Revit neck gaiter, and a pair of battery powered heated gloves. All that and I'm good to go.

Once a week, I leave the house at 7:00 AM. Even in San Diego, it’s been in the low 40s. Occassionsly high 30s. If it’s less than 50:
~ Long sleeve shirt
~ polar tech sweatshirt
~ Hd FXRG heavy leather jacket
~ leather vest
~ thermal buff
~ chaps
~ heavy knee high;socks
~ Harley winter gloves
~ full face helmet, visor closed.

Oh yeah, some extra under skin insulation.

I can ride in the low 40s for about an hour without to much problem, except for my fingers. I have a pair of textile/mesh overpants that have a thermal liner. My jacket has a thermal liner. With those an and the vents closed, my body is comfortable. I have a circular neck scarf that I tuck into the bottom of my FF helmet, which takes care of my head & neck. I have to crack my visor otherwise if gets foggy in there. I also wear insulated socks.

I got a pair of battery powered heated gloves, which I only got to use once before the snow arrived. I was out in 35 degrees with them and my hands were great.

Decades of riding and wrenching (both pro and non-pro) have left me with minor to moderate arthritis in my knuckles and fingers. This is mostly why I don't ride much below ~55 degrees at my age. I'm told that this somewhat bothersome condition was also brought on by the cold weather conditions that I experienced while living in Flagstaff AZ, the Texas pan-handle, Nor Cal, and my current location in Idaho. Younger riders should keep in mind that allowing your hands to become uncomfortably cold for extended periods of time can result in problems later in life.

I wear an Olympia Odyssey one-piece suit, with armor, HD thinsulate gloves with heated grips, and a full face helmet. Layer underneath as needed. A windshield is a must!

Under 50 degrees, I take the F150.

You get use to it

Sam_48 01-10-2018 07:44 AM

When it gets into the 40s is when I stop riding.
I have an issue where the controls feel so foreign to me while wearing gloves so I never rode with gloves. I am sure that one gets used to it but I never gave myself the chance.

I'm good down to about 20f. Thermal underwear (two layers below 30), jeans and flannel shirt, wool thermal socks, insulated boots, fleece glove liners, gauntlet gloves, fleece balaclava, Underarmor hoody, HD insulated jacket (Thinsulate) and modular full face helmet. Not exactly Ralphie in A Christmas Story but not far from it.
