On my 1991 (I am original owner) the back of the oil tank cracked, not the battery tray. But yes it was from the weight of the battery as it cracked at the tray mount. Independent shop I used back in the mid 90's welded a small plate to the back of the tank to reinforce it. It has been like that for over 20 years and I never had an issue again, still using full size HD batteries.

For me I knew I had an issue because the oil tank leaked down to the swing arm at the pivot point. Made a heck of a mess for a couple of years before I decided to fix it. Young and poor!??!

Got it home and tried to start it. It was low on oil so I added some and used a jumper to start it. It fired up after a few tries with the choke on but was rough and was sputtering as I expected for not running for years. I ran it it for about 30 seconds and it started to puke some oil out the filter so I shut it down. I may have put in too much. Polished the chrome and gave it a cleaning.

Going to replace the rear rocker gaskets only for now as it’s leaking bad, the front are dry and if it ain’t broke, change the fluids, plugs and air filter and install the new battery and try again in a week or so. I have a whole other safety check on tires , brake fluid and adjusting both chains etc before getting it inspected and legal.

Still can’t upload pix.

Chagned out the rear rocker gaskets. The bottom one basically rotted away and there was no gasket material left. The middle and upper seemed fine as they are rubber. It’s a finicky job but I could probably do it again in 30 minutes.

Installed the new battery and just need to finish the oil change before firing it up. I anticipate some carb cleaning but we will see.

Still can post pix. I click the little icon and nothing.

Changed the fluids, adjusted he clutch and cleaned the carb. It starts and runs alright but has excessive puking from the crank case breather. It will spit out 12 oz in about a minute. The tank has fluid returning but not sure if it’s a full flow into the tank.

I thought it would just puke out any over fill and then it would refill the tank when hot but it did not work. It puked and the oil light came on so I **** it down and added some and light went out.

Suggestions? Might take it down to my Indy to check it out. Could be rings or pump issues? I should run a compression check.

Took it down to my Indy to clear out the sumping and to check it over in general and for the required PA inspection.
