Default Oil Filter 63813-90 or 63813-90T

Hello Fellow Sporty Owners. I purchased a 2004 XL1200C a while back as a second bike or go to work bike. I'm really lovin it to say the least.

I know this has been beat to death in the past and was just wandering if anything else has been surfaced about it. I have been in an oil filter dilemma for the past few weeks and kind of still am.

I started out installing a Wix 57348 from Oriellys which I asked the parts guy twice if it was the right filter. He said that was what the book called for, which is probably what it showed as an upgrade. "5 micron filter right?"

I then went to my local Harley shop and talked to the parts guy which was an old EVO owner. I told him what I had and that I wanted a long chrome 30 micron filter. He said no problem and sold me a 63813-90. I took the Wix off and installed this one and now have been reading that this might not be a 30 micron filter and that I need a discontinued 63813-90T or either go to the shorter still available 63796-77A. I've also read that the T at the end of 63813-90T means Tawain as in Harley was sourcing filters from Tawain at the time. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/evo-c...on-rating.html

So what gives?? Do I need to take the filter off again and go find something else? If so what? Thanks and sorry for the long post.

I've been using the WIX 51215 black filter on my 1991 Sportster. Seems to work fine for me.

Thanks John, I would kind of like to stay with a long chrome one if possible. I figure a little more oil is better, a little more cooling and looks good. As long as it's the right one though.

Wix 51215 (black) or Wix 51225 (chrome) are the only wix options for an Evo Sportster. They're both normal height.

The tall HD filter has been discontinued for a while now and I don't know anywhere that you can get it. The T stood for tall, not Taiwan.

I run the Napa gold filter on my bike (FIL 1215), which is the same as the wix. Perfectly fine filter and is actually quite good.

Thanks Scuba10jdl. I was afraid of that. I saw on an older Harley web page that said the 63813-90T was a standard low restriction filter and the 63813-90 was a magnetic style with a magnetic ring tower with 30% more pleats, so yes, more restriction.

Yes, the Napa Gold is pretty much the same as a Wix. I've used those on other applications and they are good.

There are a few sellers on Flea Bay that still have some of the 63813-90T. Me likes the look of the long filter, I might try to snag a few. Many Thanks!

Smokey, those Harley part numbers tell us those two are interchangeable, in other words you can use either. If there was a difference as suggested, which is significant, they would have quite different part numbers. If one version does indeed have more pleats etc, that may make it more appealing, but the other version is still a valid alternative.

2004 XL1200 C
Here is a good post on xlforum.net http://xlforum.net/forums/archive/in...p/t-27643.html . Two people said they cut one of the 63813-90 filters apart and found dry spots in them which makes me want to lean toward the specified 30 micron steeds.

I love my Sporty and would sure hate to oil starve it over a $15 filter. I think I'm gonna play it safe and get either a 63805-80A black, or 63796-77A chrome 30 micron filter. Thanks for all the replys. Ride safe.

I didn't think you're supposed to use a 5 micron filter on sportsters because of oil pressure concerns. Am I wrong on this?

Jaystn62, You are right. I want to be sure to use a 30 micron.
