Default 2005 XL1200C Bad Gas Mileage

Hey Everyone,

So just got my first bike a couple weeks ago and have already ran out of gas once and almost twice now. I have a 4.5gal tank, carb, and seems like I can get only get about 100-120 miles before sputtering and needing to switch to reserve.

I do use it as a commuter to work which is ~35 miles each way canyon riding. I try to stay with the flow of traffic in that canyon (Parleys Canyon, Utah) and people are going 75mph+ including myself.

Would you say this is normal? I know some '04 to '05 had a recall that the reserve switch was installed wrong so that ON was really reserve and vice versa. Not sure if that could be a reason.

How many miles do you sporty riders normally get before having to fill up or switch to reserve?

Thanks,
Merlin

I'm getting 40 per gallon but mine's fuel injected and I have minimal inclinations, sounds about right.

I have 1200 with stage 1 carburetor, and with 2 up average about 45-47 mpg. Thats taking it easy nothing above 60 mph or so. With just me in city about 40 mpg. With 4.5 gallon tank Paugcho I get about 170 miles before filling up.

My 2005 1200c gets around 45mpg and hits reserve at about 168 miles. I would not expect much more than 20 miles on reserve, the petcock seems not to be located at the lowest pont of the tank. Mine cuts out going up hill, but can still run on level ground.

I have an EFI bike and after a bit of maths as I am in the UK it looks like mine is doing around 38 miles per US gallon 2 up on all kinds of roads.
