Default Top end rebuild - hone or not ?

HI there, So I`m doing a top end rebuild and was wondering since I`m at it is it worth changing the piston rings anyhow and if so should I bring the cylinders to the dealer so they can hone them. The engine it self is at about 50K km right now.

does anyone know how much should just a hone cost as well ?

From a long time ago now working on my car. Check the wear in the bores and then see what piston rings are available for that amount. Depending on that it might be beneficial to go for a rebore.

I think there is a measurement also for how big the gap can be at the ring ends.

The bores should be honed to give the new rings something to seat against.

You will want to foremost know what rings you are dealing with and cylinder wall material?
this will dictate the proper procedure(s)
But B4 all that you should measure the bore to check the roundness and the taper.
If out of spec no amount of anything will make the rings seal.
If the bore needs to resized you will need new pistons-

It is the standard rings on 1200v (i.e. part number 21948-02)

But the question was more in a different direction really mean the reason I`m rebuilding the top has nothing to do with the rings its the valves which need cleaning so there is no reason for me to believe the cylinder or the rings have any damage on them. So lets rephrase it - assuming its all good and there is no damage or anything - should i replace the rings anyhow. I have been told it is unlikely to get the old ones exactly in the same positions as before if i pull out the cylinder.

If you are just doing the valves why are you pulling the cylinders off.

Don't disturb them if it is not required. If you take the heads off it wouldn't hurt though to measure what the wear is.

Reason for taking the cylinder off is to replace the gasket underneath

If I had those miles and pulled down that far I would inspect and lightly hone cylinders if all checks good and replace rings and piston clips.
Why not ?

When pulling just the heads if the base gasket was not leaking I have never replaced them and never had any issues. Now as stated while you are in there it is not a bad idea to hone and replace the rings.
