Default 21” to 19” lacing.

Hello all,

Hoping someone can provide insight to my current dilemma. I have a 2006 Sportster custom, I recently decided to do a wheel swap from the stock 21” to a 19”. The question I have is if I can use my hub from the 21” and lace it using the 19” rim and spokes? One thing I have noticed is that the hub from the 21” is a staggered eyelet patten, whereas the 19” has an in-line pattern. Does the 21” staggering affect the pattern layout? Both the 19” and 21” use 40 spokes. I tried to lace the 21” staggered pattern hub to the 19” rim with the 19” spokes but when I do so the threads max out on the outer spokes, which then doesn’t allow them to engage the rim.
Is this just a matter of buying new spokes or should the ones from the 19” rim work? I assumed they would but maybe the staggered pattern of the 21” hub plays a role?

Any advice helps!

- Hunter

21” rim with hub (notice staggered pattern) also 40 spokes same pattern.

19” wheel before I disassembled (notice the in-line pattern on hub) same spoke pattern with 40.

You must use a hub for a 19" wheel to properly fit.

I thought that was the case, thank you. If I bought different spokes could I salvage the build, or would you recommend just buying a whole new rim pre assembled?

Buchanans can make you any spokes you want, and in a heaver gauge if necessary.
My Dyna has 17" rims on new style hubs and they made me a F and R heaver gauge SS spoke set, posted to me in Thailand, and laced up locally. I simply told them the rim, and hub and they did the rest.
My rims are a bit custom but still no problem

Easy
A bit more expensive if they lace it.....................
