Default 2005 1200R Tach on 2012 48?

Does anyone know if a tachometer from a 2005 1200R would work on a 2012 48 and if so what would I need to do to install as far as electrical wiring or anything like that? Any information would be appreciated.

the tach would just be 3 wires, but I don't know I the speedo would work, or If the gauge housing would fit..

if I were you just get the Harley Combo gauge or a Dakota digital.. that would look really good on a 48.

I would if I had the cash to spend on one. I want to use my stock speedo and add a tachometer from a 2005 1200R using one of the speedo relocation brackets that will clamp to the bars or forks. Does this sound like a doable mod?

Check the wiring diagram in your service manual to see what color wires are for the tach, if Harley uses the same wire harness for all Sportsters you should have those wires somewhere, maybe in the headlight bucket or just terminated somewhere by the neck or under the gas tank.

Yeah I plan on getting one soon but don't currently have one, that's why I'm asking if anyone has done it before or at least knows both bikes enough to know if it would work or not. I really need to get a service manual very badly.

Maybe I'll just wait and save up for a nice speedometer/tachometer combo that will probably look and work better as it is designed to work with my bike and I'm not trying to guess or ask around if it will work or not. I was trying to save money but maybe it will be better to spend a bit more and get nice gauges. Thanks for the suggestions and info.

If you are talking about buying the one in the Sportster classifieds, erklep is a great guy to deal with.

Yeah that's the one I was looking at. I am sure he is but I don't want to buy a tachometer that I can't use.

OK I'm looking at the wiring diagram (2007) and there are two different harnesses and the only differences between the 1200R harness and all other 1200's is a connector end prewired to plug into the tachometer.
In looking at the diagram I see that all the necessary wires for the tach are already running up to the speedo, so if you don't mind cutting off the connector end on the tach wire harness and "hard wiring" it you can hook in anywhere from the speedo to the main harness.
