Default 2013 Sportster (XL1200C) is stuttering at low RPMs

I just bought an XL1200C and my first couple test drives went great. As I started riding it a little more I noticed some stuttering at low RPMs. Once I get to the higher end of the range it runs great. First couple thoughts were to replace the plugs and air filter. I replaced the plugs with some E3's and have not noticed a difference. When I went to the HD store for a new filter I was told that I have a Screaming Eagle filter and am waiting for it to come in but have low expectations about it fixing my issue. I was also informed that it should be mapped and that might take care of it but $300 mapping is something I found out I might be able to do myself. I just need to find out if I have an EFI tuner installed. Which I plan on doing over the next couple of days.

My first question is if it is ok to ride while i get this ironed out? Mostly just short trips, but would like to drive it to HD which is about a 20 minute ride.

Second question is if there is anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions

Same problem here. I have autotuned it with powervision target. But still have the issue. I guess sporster likes rpm >2000

The 2007-2013 Sportsters have little ignition timing advance between idle and 2000 rpms
Something you might try with the Power Vision is the 2018 Sportster stage 1 ignition timing advance-

Stock 2013 Sportster Front-

2018 Sportster Stage 1 Front-

Default New info

thanks for the info. Not exactly sure how to read the chart. I did find out that I have a stage 1 conversion kit Installed and probably need to have it mapped. Looks like I have a lot of research to do.

Planning to install some HD plugs instead of the E3s I installed earlier and the seafoam I added has made a difference but not as much as I had hoped.

One question I have is if I can use someone else's tuner or do I need to buy one?

If you can, get some one to ride it that is familiar with Harley's. It may be normal. My feels the same way after riding an online four. Not saying it is normal but these engines definitely run differently.

The recommended steady speed cruise range is 2800 - 5000 RPM.
If you're trying to maintain slower speeds at lower RPMs (15-20 MPH) it will require feathering the clutch.

I would recommend getting a tuner. Mine had a slight stutter at low RPMs. I got the FP3 and customer service sent me a custom map based on my setup. That really helped. They are really good at custom maps. I found that auto-tune made it worse.

That's what I have been trying to do. Its the 35 mile range that kills me.

35 MPH on a 1200 in 2nd gear should put you at about 3200 RPM and run smoothly. If that's not the case, looking at a tuner may be in order.
