Default how do you turn this thing off!

The other day i was looking through my user manual (i know, rookie mistake)......and found out that i've been turning off my 05 sportster off improperly.

All this time i have been shutting it off with the key. The operators manual says to shut it off with the on/off switch on the handlebars.

That just seems "Goofy" to me......anyone know what their reasoning is for that?

I hit the kill switch to shut down my Softail about 90% of the time. I am not sure it makes a difference. I guess it has to have a reason, maybe safety or something like that.

Because sometimes the start switch shorts out and when you turn on the ignition
It'll try to start.(if you park it in gear it'll jump)

When the Stop / Run switch is turned off, the ECU still has power and it resets the IAC (Idle Air Control) pintle position (at least on the EFI Sportsters) the 05 should be carbed.
Turning the key off may cause the IAC to be out of normal position when the engine is restarted.

04 the Sporty went to Fuel Inject when they did the frame change.
Wife had an 02 and it had a carb. I do miss that Sporty, This weekend going to look at an ironhead Roadster (82)

It’s safer to shut any bike off at the handle bar, it’s universally at the same spot on every bike. Hands are still on the bars, it’s actually a good practice to shut every bike off that way. Knowing where it is will safe your engine on tipped over on older carb bikes

Yes, I have always taught people to use the handlebar switch so in the advent of the emergency, one does not have to go searching for it ~!
It is good to build safe reflexes.
As having it in gear with spokes or wheel turning grinding your leg off.

The stuff you do as normal part of your routine will be the first thing you look to in an emergency. If you ever have to kill your engine quickly, the easiest and fastest place is the BRS (which isn't red on a Sporty) than it is at the ignition.

OTOH, if you always use the key, you'll never have to worry about discharging your battery because you forgot to turn off the power at the key. Don't ask me how I know this, please.

TO SHANNEBA:

So..... your'e thinking that the engine may re-start easier if you've used the "shutoff" on the handlebar? Am i following you correctly?
I looked up the wiring diagram you referenced and it just looked like a foreign language to me.

I'm thinking you might be on to something, it must be more than just "safety". (although i'm sure safety may be part of it). Cars are turned off and on with the key they could just as easily put a engine kill switch on the steering wheel , but they don't. hmmmm
