Oil line diagram
Believe it or not I am having problems finding an oil line diagram for my 1991 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 could anyone out there please help me I'd appreciate it thank you very much . More specifically I am looking for where the line runs from the oil tank down to the oil pump do I have to take that cover plate off to to get to it thank you

I just went though this and the manual is not great. The lower oil feed line from the tank runs under the starter and then makes a turn down an opening behind the cam cover to the oil pump. The return line from the oil pump runs next to it. If you get a mirror and look up under the cam chest cover you can see or look from the opposite side behind the cover. You should barely see a vent line attached in front of the where the oil lines sneak down to the pump.
Good luck.

No, the only line under the starter on my 1991 is the oil tank to cam chest vent line. The feed line goes across to the left of the engine and down underneath and the return line comes up from the left side as well. Let me see if I can find it in my FSM. Both feed and return line go right behind the area at the back of the clutch housing. It's not shown well, but here's from my 1991 FSM: I colored in where the feed line is actually in FRONT of that downtube, it's a very poorly drawn diagram. The red and blue feed lines go UNDER the engine, only the light blue line goes under the starter.
I guess you can probably route them under the starter like the newer bikes. I'd take a good look at the new routing to be sure of how it's done. I can also take some pictures of mine if it will help you. It appears on my bike you can change the feed and return lines without pulling the sprocket cover or exhaust pipes, they just go across and down under and along the lower frame tubes. If you change the vent line you'll have to remove that cover, which means pulling the exhaust pipes.
