Me to , riding down the road in 2016 right after I bought my new 883 Iron and the battery cover came loose . Went to the dealer and they informed me Harley had fixed that problem years ago with the new clip style ? LIARS ! As usual Harley refuses to admitt when they have a defect in one of their bikes . I just drilled a small hole through the plastic clip and through the metal cover and inserted a steel cotter pin .

I have since come up with a way they could fix it without redesigning the cover, which I know costs money. I think I will write them an email and see what their response is. Might design t(he part myself and sell it.

The clips that are on my 2017 custom will about bust your knuckles trying to open the battery cover. And it takes a good shot with the heel of your hand to snap it back on. That sucker is not coming off in the wind.

It's not the wind that knock them off. They vibrate the top out, then it opens up, and THEN the wind takes it off.

Well I picked up the new clips this AM on our way out of town. The powder coat shop called and my cover is done. Pick it up Monday so will see how the new clips feel. After seeing how failure prone they are I am leery of using the new $25 clips I had already paid for.

Picked up all my parts now and will put it back together tomorrow. This little pthing turned into a larger job than I originally thought. Sure hope I never have a serious issue, no telling how big that will grow.

Still undecided if I want to put the new clips on or go velcro. Not sure the clips are worth the risk.

Assuming you purchased the same OEM clips that are on the current models, the battery cover is not coming off unless you're pulling it off. This also assumes you don't have so much stuff crammed behind the cover it's like sitting on your suitcase to latch the lid!

Well the dealer parts guy said it was a upgraded part, so maybe. The front was no different than what was on it, but there is a bit of pressure pushing the cover out. Not my doing as I have not delved into that yet, so I ended up going the velcro route after all. I have very little confidence in the clips and this was an expensive lesson, I do not wish to repeat.

Took it for a short ride, about 40 miles, this afternoon and the front still was sticking out a bit, even with the velcro, so I redid how the velcro hooks on, holding the front in much tighter. Will see after next ride.

My new to me Sportster came with a broken battery cover clip. So I was looking for solutions and actually remembered Bike N Birds video (the one you posted). I’ve used the Velcro strips for a year now and have had zero issues.

That's good to hear. I put some extras on the bike, just in case. Those and some zip ties will be part of my tool kit.
