Default Reusable oil filters: gimmick, or. . . ?

So I recently learned about the existence of Reusable oil filters. In theory, its a great idea. Arlen Ness sells one for $162. Their claim is that their filter will catch particles 3x smaller than a conventional filter will (about 35 microns). Another claim from Ness is that conventional filters can flow so poorly that unfiltered oil can flow thru the bypass valve. I thought that was interesting.

Anyone ever use em or are currently using em?

Its hard to judge the validity of something like this, as symptoms of poor oil filtration are a long game. Then again, paper filters have been around forever, so they obviously are doing something right. But if there's a new, more efficient filter, might be worth looking at.

Not for me. It would take about 50,000 miles to just about break even on the cost. Not worth experimenting with when the proven tech of 5000 mile filters that work. IMHO.

Not for me either. I can buy a whole bunch of OEM filters for that amount. Friend of mine "had" one and all it did was leak. I asked him if he could really get it clean when he changed the oil? All he could say was "I hope so". I prefer new and won't take the chance. Oil is the life blood of the motor, a good filter is one simple thing I don't want to worry about. I'm sure there are people that say they are the best. To each his own.

I have one of these. I like the idea that I can inspect the filter easily for debris without having to use a hacksaw. I'll take a wildass guess and say that they probably filter at least as good as a K&N or Fram or whichever other you'd care to name. Is it worth the money? Up to you to decide.

That's a good point, about whether or not your getting the filter clean enough. With paper filters, you know for sure your starting with a fresh clean filter.

I used these...you can read the benefits of using high performance filters. Looked good too. Never had any leaks. But I can understand those who don't want to spend the money.

Never Ever use a hacksaw to cut examine an oil filter
They make a tool for it-
Amazon Amazon

Reusable filters have been around since day one-
Most people don't like screwing with them.
Remember the old style on the cars up to the early 1960s?
You took it apart and inserted a new element in them.
Not a fun job.

I run with the DK filter also. Keeps the oil cooler as well. Love the look. Next oil change on my Super Glide I will be adding one also

I bought one from PC a few years back. The nice thing about a reusable filter is you don't have to plan oil changes around going after a filter. I stock up with oil so when I hit 5k miles, I have everything I need. They look better and maybe even cool the oil a little but wasn't banking on that when I bought it. Plus it fits from my 96" to my M8 so no need to buy another one. I figure it already has itself half paid for just on my Street Glide I had and now the miles are racking up on the 2019 Road Glide Special. Let's not forget that there are fewer used oil filters filling up the landfills.

The ones that bought them will praise them to justify the money they spent. So its easier and faster to clean that messy filter than it is to stop off for 5 minutes and get a new clean filter. Who knew.
