883 primary sporcket on 1200
As the title says, wondering if anyone swapped out the primary drive belt sprocket from an 883 to a 1200 and what you thought about it later. I ask because 1st gear is so rediculously tall on my 1200. I know it affects ALL gears so wondering what overall impressions were. As I understand what I have been reading, the 883 has lower gear primary sprocket and final sprocket, yes? No? I don't want 70mph RPM's to go nuts though. |
At least on the later models, only primary gear (and chain) are different, unless you might be
referring to the export model front pully. (and yes, I switched the stock 29tooth for a 30tooth) I did the exact opposite, switched my 883 primary/chain for the 1200 because of the high-rpm buzz at 70+mph. T. |
You can compare 883 and 1200 gearing, for your model year, by using a parts website. It would also help members to reply to queries if you include details of your bike, something you can add to your signature so you don't have to keep repeating it!
A popular mod to an 883 is to convert it to 1200/1250/1275, using one a variety of conversion kits and leaving the gearing stock is common-place. So you will be in good company if you use 883 gearing on your bike. It will certainly improve acceleration and won't adversely affect speed by much, if at all. If you suffer 'buzz' at speed, use ear plugs - cheapest tuning aid known to man! I've been using them since the 1970s. |

You will turn 4000 rpms @ 70 mph. What year is your bike. There could be other problems as well.

Sorry I thought I had my bike in my signature. Bike is a 2007 XL1200L. Nothing wrong with the bike other than "cruising" at 10+ mph at idle. I may have used the wrong term but am referring to front belt sprocket not the chain driven primary. I will update my sig later today |
That one will effect your speedometer. The primary front sprocket wont. I don't spend much time in 1st. I do spend a lot of time cruising in 5ft.

When I looked at the parts finder it shows 16 and 18 for both the 883L and 1200L. Looking at this on my phone and with my eyes not sure if those are part numbers on the diagram or number of teeth on the sprocket. |
Apache I get what you are saying and my biggest gripe with the high gearing is it requires a lot more clutch slipping for low speed control. Not a HUGE issue but annoying. There may not be a perfect solution. A 6 spd with a lower first and MAYBE slightly taller 6th would do it but that is not an option or at least one I can afford. The only 6spds I see are for 2003 and older and at least $2500. |
I believe the only difference in the late 883 and 1200 is the front primary sprocket. the 883 has 34 teeth and the 1200 has 38. All the other sprockets are the same. Not to include exports.
