replace spring on rear shock sportster

how to replace the springs on rear shock on a sportster 883 iron 2016 and up

You need to compress the spring enough so the keeper on top of the spring can slide off from around the shock shaft.

I can't seem to find any tutorials for the 883 iron shock disassembly. 1 website said it can't be done .

Im not real familiar with the oem shocks, since I normally just replace the entire shock. They may not sell springs for them. But I would think they come apart like any other shock.

I see progressive springs for sale , may be they fit ?

I saw that tool but I don't think that will work on the oem shocks . I want to know the procedure to take the springs off the oem shock

What you actually NEED is an FSM, from which you will discover that the shocks do not seem to be servicable - replace as two new units. I agree with whylee and the website you refer to, that they are not designed to be dismantled. I will go further and say don't even try, as the spring may well have a pre-load which could prove harmful if you successfully release it.

Tell us why you want to remove the springs, as we can be more helpful if you let us know what you want to achieve. It is unlikely that a different brand of springs will fit.

I wanted to try and replace the stock springs with a softer spring . it seems such a waste to just replace them with a new set. I appreciate the feedback but I will like to try it anyways . if only I can get the springs off i can go to a used parts dealer and try on different springs. I need a softer suspension but I have to try this option first before I buy a new set.

Assuming you've already tried adjusting the preload right ?
Here's a video, fastforward to 5:52 for the sportster
