2016 XL883N Iron upgrades
Hi, this may be a daft question but here goes.
if I was to change the exhaust or air intake, do I have to have a remap done? I was looking at a stage one but its a bit out of my range at the moment. So I thought maybe just upgrade the exhaust in the mean time.
Thanks in advance.

There are some alternatives that work well, but not too expensive. Check out this Report HERE.
If you just do the exhaust and leave the stock intake, no remap needed. Same, no remap need if doing intake and leaving exhaust stock. BUT, even a bone stock bike will run much nicer with one of THESE to fix the OEM lean condition.
Some good info HERE before delving into a Stage I upgrade. Best to Do It Right The First Time.

It would appear that as the years have gone on the MoCo has tuned slightly leaner each time.
From new I could hear the engine of my 2017 XL1200T was tuned lean by the note of the exhaust.
If you can get away with some kind of tune up even now your bike will sound and run much nicer.
Looking at hardware costs it looks about even to me for A/C and exhaust cost = electronic tuner cost.
From experience I would do a retune and then save up for the hardware. You will have the tuner to retune to the new hardware when needed.
