Exclamation Oil Tank Fitment Issues

Hey Guys,

Looking to switch out my chrome oil tank for a black one on my 1991 Sporty. Only issue I'm having is I cannot find one for my year range on eBay (any tank from 86-91 I believe). There are plenty for the 1994-2003 year range. I know the oil tanks change in 1994. But does anyone know how they improved? Will they still fit the same mounts and hoses on my '91?

Can't find this info anywhere. Thanks!

I don't think the 1994 tank will just bolt onto your bike. I believe Harley sold an upgrade kit at one time to install the later tank. I also have a 1991, but have the stock black tank. I put in a Shorai lithium battery to eliminate most of the weight hanging on the battery tray mount. Hopefully, that prevents any stress cracking.

Why not just paint the chrome tank black? Rough it up with Scotch Brite, and use some gloss black paint.

Why does it have to be ebay? Go to your local independent and have them order you one from CC, Teds or whoever they normally deal with.

Plenty of aftermarket manufactures that offer replacement tanks for that model right around $130 new.

Matty; Check in to having your existing tank powder coated gloss or satin black. Entails bead blasting the chrome to dull it and allow the powder to adhere during dusting and baking phase. That way no fitment problems. Check with your local powder coat business. They can perform all these steps.

Not sure what the issue is. Parts are everywhere.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the replies! I was looking into used tanks because it seems like I can grab one with minimal wear and tear for $35-$60 I'd be paying that for supplies alone if I tried paint myself and painting chrome barely ever looks great long term. It'd also be close to $100 for powder coating. I know I can get a new OEM from Drag specialties for like $140 but that just seemed ridiculous with the amount of used ones available.

Thank you all who tired to offer other solutions but I just needed to know if a 94-03 tank would bolt on because so many of them are using the normal 91-03 part range to advertise fitment when I know the tanks changed in '94.
