Default Ham Can Backplate Mod for free flow

I know there are a few old threads in this forum about modifying the backplate on original ham can to make the AC more free flow.

Perhaps the fixtures on this thread can remember but I don't. Please provide a link to the thread on what was done to modify the backplate if you can find it or can remember.

Thanks.

Thats what I did. Ten 1/2 inch holes around the backing plate.

There have been threads....I have no links.
Cut the a portion of the bottom section of the ham, add screen and re-paint also looked good to me.
Good luck, great project.

I frequented the sportster forum for quite some time and remember mods being done to ham cans from those who liked the ham can look. This project is actually for a 71 FLH shovelhead that I am restoring the outside back to original/correct. I currently have an S&S super B tear drop AC and the stock is an oval ham can which was also used on evo sportsters with different insert. My shovel has a 96 stroker but the outside looks original except the paint. This is the ham can and insert I need to modify for better air flow.

Sorry, I know this is not a Sportster but the Ham Can was a big part of the Sportster history and still prevalent today.....so I know this subject has come up many times in the sportster forum

Here is Elvis' 1971 Electra-Glide with the original ham can I plan to install on my 71....my intent is to keep the AC looking original but modify the backplate for more airflow without being able to see the mod looking at the AC. Perhaps I just need to use a wider K&N filter and slightly longer cover bolts to create a small gap between the backplate and the cover. I am not looking to cut the cover or drill holes on the sides. The suggestion to cut the bottom of the backplate and place a screen might be viable as you can't see the mod.

Thanks for the responses....

Could just get a Stage 1 setup off of ebay. When I did the Stage 1 on mine I bought the whole kit (used) off of ebay for around $55. All I used from it was the backing plate though since I had another style cover.

If there are no other options/alternatives, I may do just that....pick up a stage 1 setup from Hammer Performance like IMPACT air hammer AC kit like this

Route the crankcase breathers out of the airbox. Your engine will love you for it.
