Default Changing primary fluid 09 XL883L

When changing the primary fluid is it necessary to put on a new gasket kit? I do not have a manual-just ordered...but can't wait for it. Doing the oil and primary fluids this weekend

I've reused the chain inspection gasket and the derby cover gasket a number of times. You can't really mess up the inspection gasket but be careful with the derby cover gasket when putting it back on. Worst case you pinch it they're only like $1 from the dealer..

You might want to get the gaskets anyway, since you're doing it this weekend. If you run into a problem like tearing the gasket at least you'll have a backup. Can't hurt to have them in your stock as opposed to in dealer stock.

Whew!! I saw the thread title and thought this was going to be a question on what oil to use.

Change them. Why not?

The O ring rubber gaskets I sometimes reuse, I have never had a problem reusing them. The paper board gaskets I always replace. Dont forget about the washer on the drain plug. I normally run a flat file over each side for a couple of passes. If it looks flat and clean I feel ok to reuse it. If it looks bent and dinged up, replace it.

No I'm good on the oil...I can even manage to change the oil myself. LOL I've just never done the primary fluid and want to make sure I don't mess it up

Might be worth mentioning that if , like me , you have mid pegs , you will not be able to get the bottom bolt out of the clutch inspection cover without removing the left hand footrest bracket . You might want to get rid of those ridiculous Torx button head bolts while your about it . I've just replaced mine which is how I discovered the awkward bolt .
