I recently got a 2003 883xl it has forward controls i am a short women plus brake pedel is in a very uncomfortabe position.
I am ok with shifter but would like to just change to mids all together. What do i need to buy and is there a place i can learn how to do this myself.

 

yes you should be able to do this yourself.
go to Harley's web site and you can get the mids from them. Not sure if they are available for your year but I would assume so

I would first take a look at Ebay, or here on the forum, there are plenty who may want to trade with your forwards.

 

For installation info I would do a search on YouTube

 

Put an ad on your local Craig's List for someone who wants to trade. There's an endless cycle of people who want what they don't have. This way two people are happy with zero out of pocket expense. And yes, I know there's a YouTube video out there to show you how. Good luck.

 

Forwards are more expensive than mids, and when I switched to mids, I sold the forwards (HD brand, all chrome) for about $225 IIRC. I added $25 max for shipping and forgot to mention to where. So of course some dude from Hi bought them (ebay) and it ended up costing me another $15. Worth it though.

I think I paid about $125 for the mids, but not positive on the amount.

Sadly I do not remember everything I needed to swap. I THINK it was basically everything by the footpegs. Be advised you will have to at least loosen the front exhaust muffler and header to put on the mids.

You will need SAE allen wrenches or sockets, and Torx bits to do the job, in addition standard SAE wrenches.

 

There’s plenty of kits on eBay, on the shifter side you need a shifter that usually has a peg on it and the bracket, on the brake side you need the brake pedal that goes to the brake rod and they both attach to the mount bracket that will look like it hugs under to the frame under the exhaust. Most kits on eBay are full kits you just swap your pegs from the forward controls and use your current hardware. Found a random pick on google of a good idea of what youre looking for

 

As soon as I got my XL1200 I went on eBay , found some genuine Harley Davidson mid controls for £80 , offered £65 and got them . Then I put my HD forward controls on eBay and got £90 for them . Happy days ! You may have to remove the front muffler to get the mids on . I actually didn't but it was a hell of a fiddle . You're going to need two extra bolts if you want to keep the front right hand cable clip .
