Help others to help you.
You have a 2001 sportster what? 883, 1200 USA model?
What condition was bike in prior to problem?
So you attached battery backwards and attempted to start or went down the road with it or what?
What does battery is good mean to you? load tested? just a voltage test?
Why is starter new?
We can not see or touch the bike so from a distance with zero history it is rather difficult to know what you have.
Could be something like a security system that got fried, a relay that got burnt or ignition module was destroyed but from a distance it is rather difficult to direct a solution.

Here's the specs.
2001 XLH1200C
Excellent condition, always garaged, maintenance per book.
Z bars, SE2 slip ons, Mikuni HSR42 installed 10+ years ago.
Never a hiccup till 2 weeks ago, then got the rapid click of the starter solenoid.
Spent a week checking wires, connections, no corrosion found, wires good.
Battery at 12.6 - 12.7 volts.
Starter pulled for rebuild but I installed a new one.
Then I connected the damn battery wrong,,,,,
Literally lights out,,,, and everything else. No start, horn, signal,,,,,
But starter works if I connect direct to if from battery and 12V to solenoid.
