We've had several guesses on why it happens, over the years, but I'm not sure we have the true explanation! Certainly the alloy parts are likely to expand when hot, more so than the steel/iron parts like the front pulley. I'm sure someone in the MoCo knows, but its a shame they don't pass it on - can't be a National secret, after all!
