Transmission leak

Transmission fluid is now leaking out of where the primariy case meets the engine. It leaks out towards the front of the bike on the top and bottom of the primary case. I've tightened all the alan wrench bolts around it a couple of times and gotten them all really tight. i checked the transmission fluid level and it was actually low. I filled it up to spec and rode it around for a bit. After i got back i kept the bike running and put it on the jiffy stand and took a look at the case and it was just dripping out of the case. I turned it off and noticed that the dripping slowed then just dripped every once in a great while. I'm thinking that perhaps its a gasket or something? has anyone else had this problem? is it that difficult to replace the primary case gasket?

you didnt say wether your bike was new or not, but if some one put a gasket in, they could have messed it up installing it. (its real easy to do) its pretty easy to change if your good at fixing stuff, just make sure that the surface is real clean and free of old gasket material on both surfaces. use a little gasket cement to hole it in place and carefully install the primary cover, dont forget to refill with the proper lube. good luck!!:):)

Its a 1997 1200 sportster XLH with 16K on it. Thanks for the advice, i'll probably try and tackle it sometime this winter since it really doesnt leak too much at all when its just sitting there. It seems rather spontaneous as to the degree of leakage, it will sometimes leak more than other other times even if i drive the same distance w/ relatively same usage. know any good place to score a good/cheap primariy case gasket?

It sounds like a gasket leak to me also. I would be careful tightening the allen bolts, they should be torqued down. Tim

RE: Transmission leak

I took a really good look at the bike and service manual today and am quite positive that the leak is in fact coming from where i originally thought (the primary case). But i was wondering if there was anywhere else primary/tranny fluid could leak from. Whenever i set the bike upright (center-stand like) and run it, primary/tranny fluid drips from the middle of the bike but i think its just running down from the primary case. When i set it on the jiffy stand and run it, it drips off the primary case. is there any possibility that primary/tranny fluid could leak from the bottom-most point of the engine or anywhere else besides the primary case?

You could have a crack in the case, it could be on the seal between the main shaft and the case, or it could be one of the retaining bolts that hold the inner primary case to the engine case. Do not over tighten those primary bolts. It's not a big deal to remove the outer to look. If your inner is cracked I have a original 01 TC88 you can have if it will fit.

RE: Transmission leak

i will definately scope out the inner primary case. i appreciate the offer on the TC88. Since this is my first gasket-installation i was wondering if anyone had any extra advice on making the gasket fit better. Should i use some silicone or anything? it looks like theres some kind of glue beaded on there as it is, would it be any better if i put some silicone on top of that?
