I have a 2021 xl1200x 48 I'm at 17000 miles. At about 15,000 miles my stator went completely dead stranding me on the road. Harley changed it out under warranty. Anyway the other day at a stop light I got a wiff of what smelled like burning ka ka and from what I gather that's the stator going out again. Is there any suggestions on why I'm going thru stators?
I have heard of the stator constantly burning out on Sportster models before, the cause was traced to a faulty rectifier / regulator unit.
When the rectifier / regulator was replaced, the burning problem disappeared.
The rectifier / regulator unit acts as a switch, when the battery needs charging it turns on the power from the alternator, when the battery doesn't need charging it turns off the alternators power to avoid overcharging the battery.
It looks like your rectifier / regulator has failed, get it checked out and if it has failed, get it changed for a new unit under the factory warranty. A rectifier / regulator should not fail after about a year, that is a premature failure.
