Default What's the deal?

Hi all. New to the forum and to HDs. Just bought a new Sportster, and I am really enjoying it.

One question: Both my manual and the dealership seem to implie strongly that the only oil that can be used is HD oil. I know that air cooled engines require special blends, but is HD oil the only one, and would use of another brand void a warrenty?

I have no problem with HD products, but it is a long way to the dealership!

I use full synthetic oil in both the engine and Primary. I use the weight recomended in my manual. The mechanic at the dealership I go to uses full synthetics in his bikes too. Good Stuff.

I feel that they are telling you that so you will buy their oil, it's understandable. Will it void the warranty, I really don't know. Are there other oils that can be used, DEFINITELY. A lot of people on this forum have used Mobile oil for motorcycles. There should be a section of the useage of oil in Harleys that might prove interesting for you to read and it might answer some of your questions.

p.s. the section on oils will be in the tech section of this forum, hope that it helps.

You do not have to use Harley oil...there are laws that protect consumers from that kind of 'requirement'. In fact, many dealers in the Milwaukee area sell other brands of oil--especially synthetic brands.

I use AMSOIL 20W-50 and I have had good results.

Hope this helps.

Hi welcome to the Fourm, I agree with Mike find a good dealer you can trust and will work for/with you. Then swing by the other shop and tell them how much your spending at your "New Place". Or better yet get them to put it in writting that you can "ONLY" use HD oil, go find a good lawyer and make it your very own HD Shop.

Hey, thanks to all that replied. It kinda smelled like BS to me, but I thought I would check with some folks who would know! Appreciate it.

I will read the tech section on oils.

Kinda like ford telling you, you have to use motorcraft. My fords are running on Pennzoil. There are other brands that will work. Like mentioned, in the self help there is a lot on motor oil.
