Agree with all other posts, put 1st in before you stop.!!!!BUT if you would forget, release the clutch with witch ever gear you have. Run just half a yard, to get the gearbox spinning. Try to shift while you're still moving. If you're an experienced rider, rev it up a bit at the same time as you release the clutch.

Always be in a gear that you can ride in- even when braking. I find myself engine breaking more then using the actual brakes. But thats not saying that I kill the engine, I gradually down shift.

I guess that's why the manual says to shift into 1st and then into neutral. I was in the habit of doing that since I first started riding in 1973, so I never had this problem.

I mostly do it that way, 'cause I can't seem to keep track of exactly which gear I'm in. This is alsowhy I keep searching for the elusive 6th gear.
