RE: mushroom helmet
I figure if you're gonna wear a helmet, it may as well be DOT approved. The smallest DOT helmets I'm aware of are carbon fiber; not carbon fiber DESIGN, but REAL carbon fiber. They are lightweight, but mostly expensive. If a helmet is required in your state (in this case Mississippi?), and they DO NOT require a DOT approved helmet, then any novelty helmet will do. If you actually reside and ride in a free state, then why bother with a helmet at all if looks are your main concern? All my helmets are DOT, and one is both DOT and Snell approved. But I live in Texas, which if you meet some simple requirements, are exempt from wearing a helmet. So sometimes I don't. But since I got my Daytona Skull Cap carbon fiber, I'm wearing it more often because it's actually comfortable to me. But it may not fit you, so my suggestion for buying helmets is try 'em on first. Carbon fiber helmets are the lightest, smallest DOT approved helmets on the market, but you'll be paying around $100 for them. I got mine on closeout for $54 out the door. Retailed for $99. MSRP is $150.
What helmet do you have now, and is it comfortable? Probably heavy, considering the size and style but does it FIT your head? And what do you want the helmet to do for you? Protect you in a crash? State law requirement? How much are you willing to spend? The narrower-profile DOThalf helmets tend to cost a bit more than the rest. Different manufacturers fit different heads in different ways. HJC fits me very well, but Shoei and Bell do not. I could probably modify a Bell enough to fit comfortably but not Shoei.
Bottom line is just Google "carbon fiber motorcycle helmets" and look at what comes up.
