Default 1976 xlh1000 carb problems

hey guys i just got a 1976 xlh 1000 from my uncle its been sitting for a while and when i try to start it up gas pours out of the carb i thought it was the float or ball and seat but i cleaned and inspected everything and it still does also i cant get the idle right and it backfires up through the carb and as soon as i open the choke it revs up real high then dies any input would be helpful. thanks

Personally, I'd make sure ALL and ANY old gas is completely out of the tank and system. Next I would do a complete carb rebuild and make sure no varnish has built up (kits are available that are inexpensive - there may even be a hole in the float of the carb). Sounds like if it starts on choke and then dies out that you could be floooding it off (hole in float again is possible). Any bike that's been just sitting for a while should have it's carb(s) rebuilt - IMO.

Let us know how you make out.

By the way, a 1976 Ironhead is a NICE bike - congratulations!

I'd **** can the stock carb if still so equipped and pick up a later model CV carb from Ebay or a forum member.
You'll need an adapter, about $35 as I recall and a Used CV will set ya back about $50.
It'll start better, get better mileage and wont be bothered by changes in altitude.
This mod and swapping out the points ignition for a good electronic unit will make a much more reliable easier starting ironhead.

Hello there! Im new on here but am having some similar issues on my 76 XlCH 1000. Just wondering if you put on a carb yet or rebuilt yours or did you do the CV Carb and adaptor upgrade as mentioned on a reply? Would appreciate to know as I am researching my carb issues and sound exactly the same as what you are going through!

Thanks!
