Jiffy Stand won't stay down

My friend just bought a new 09 1200 custom and the jiffy stand does not want to stay down unless the weight is on the bike and it locks. I tried myself and putting the stand down with my foot and it keeps popping back up, you have to put the stand down and hold it there with your foot while lowering the bike down on it to put weight on the stand. Since she just picked up the bike a couple of days ago and doesn't yet have a service manual I couldn't look it up. I did look up for the jiffy stand in my Softail manual but it does not reference any adjustment, just replacement. I know we could take it back to the dealer but since the dealer is fairly far away if it is just a simple adjustment it is just easier to do it myself for her.

Sounds like the spring on it is too tight. Tell him to get a new one from Harley. Shouldn't cost much.

My buddy has a '06 1200C and had the same problem. Mine locks when fully extended, his would snap back when the weight was taken off the stand. We figured out his spring was on backwards, you will need to move were the spring connects to the jiffy stand to the other side (mine connects to the left, his was on the right). Kinda hard to explain without seeing it ...

I had flipped the spring around but and it helped a little but it still wants to just snap back up without any weight on the bike. She is just going to take it back across town to the dealer when she has a chance. I can't figure out any other way to make it stay down when it's not weighted.

I would look at it like this, hard to forget to put it up when it does it by it's self. It's a good habit to get into holding the stand down till the weight of the bike is on it. I dropped my sportster once by not holding the stand down and it folded back up as
I putting it over.

mine did the same thing. I just figured it was because it was brand new and needed to stretch a little... Rides fine.

Killer Scott,

Did your jiffy stand ever settle in and stop popping back up after some time on it?

A side stand should stay down when you put it down and come up only when you put it up.
At some point when the stand is almost completly extended the spring should come "over center" and start pulling the stand forward instead of backwards.
You may have to bend the pin on the frame that the spring attaches to a little bit forward to make that happen, it sounds like your tab is bent slightly to the rear so it never comes over center.

Take it to the dealer, it's under warranty.

If it's only across town, I'd take it back to the dealer. It's not supposed to do that, and that's something that should be OBVIOUS when they do the final inspection before they release the bike. Erect bike, raise sidestand, take to service area, lower sidestand, park. Erect bike again, raise sidestand, roll onto bike lift, check fluids, fasteners, cables and lines. Roll bike off the lift to someplace to park it, lower sidestand and park. It SHOULD have been noticed.
