Default 2004 1200c oil change question..

I am getting ready to change my oil in a 2004, 1200 custom. Can anyone tell me the capacities for the motor oil and the primary. I have no owners manual and the HD shop was out of the sevice manuals. I am changing out both for amsoil. Any help would be apreciated. Thanks

I suggest getting the service manual before attempting any wrenching task on the sporty.

Also, PM me and I can send you a oil change video, performed on a late model sporster.

The oil is very easy to change...

Good advice! Last fall, I ran over some sort of metal plate in the road and it put a small pin hole in one of the oil lines on the underside of my bike. Mind you I had only had it for 2 weeks at this point. Well having some exp. wrenching on cars, I figured "no problem". Ya. . Before I knew what the cam cover was, I started undoing bolts to get to the oil pump, and all of a sudden I had cams in my lap!! You know that sinking feeling, when you realize you just screwed up. . . . . . . . . .

Look on ebay for a service manual. Google HD service manuals and you will find a supplier.

Thanks for the advice on the service manual, but I was hopeing someone could just give me the specs on how much oil to put back in the motor and the primary when you change it. If anyone that has a book for a 2004 1200 custom could look, I would be greatful. Thanks

AM7010,

I believe the oil capacity is 3.6 quarts

The primary should take exactly 1 quart.

-Use mobil1 v-twin 20w50 to fill the oil tank
-Use RevTech in the primary

Have you seen the scavenger system? Worth checking out.

I just finished my engine and primary oil change. The primary went fine, the motor oil on the other hand I have a few questions. First the oil drained very slowly from the hose, which I thought was odd so I removed the filter thinking it might speed things up (made the usual mess.) I only got about 2 quarts out of the motor plus what spilled from the filter. I know the oil was a little low due to the famous 2004+ rocket cover leak(now fixed). I replaced the filter and added 3 qt. of oil and now the my oil level looks to be about 3/4 qt. to full. Any thoughts?
