Default Primary chain Inspection cover leaking

This past weekend I did the 15,000 on the bike. Prior to doing it I went to the local dealer and got the gasket's and O-Rings, filter etc that I would need. Except for the filter being a pain in the A$$ to get off everything went with out a hitch until I took it out for a spin. When I got back I notice the primary chain inspection cover leaking. I double checked the torque and everything looked OK.

So I decided get another gasket thinking the original one may have been defective. when I went today the parts person told me that HD had changed the p/n of the gasket and that it made out of a different material. I told her that I had just replaced it during the 15000 mile so she went back and talked to a mechanic. He came back and said that the new gasket takes a new cover.

My question is has anyone else had to do this on an 05 1200C?

Thanks
Bill

I changed my primary inspection cover to the black one and I noticed it came with a totaly different gasket. So far it has not leaked. You know that there are some ruuber O rings around the bolts right!

Yea man this has been brought up before. I even started a thread about my own personal experience with it. Seems more than a few people were having trouble getting the old style rubber gaskets to seal so HD changed to a paper style, BUT the paper gasket WILL NOT seal properly without the new THICKER inspection cover. Search the forum and you should find some more info. I believe it started this August or thereabouts...

If it leaks enough it will blow back on the rear brake , had that happen. The indy down the street sold me an aftermarket gasket that is a rubberized sandwich that supposed to be good, I think it's Drag Specialties, Have not tried it yet but it looks like good quality

Thanks everyone, I wanted to make sure I was being feed some trash. I did try and search on the subject but either I didn't put the right wording in or I didn't go back far enough.

I did pick up the new cover and I'll be installing the later part of the week.

Thanks
Bill

I think some of the dealers still have a 'secret stash' of the old style rubber gaskets.

When I changed the primary fluid in my 2005 a couple weeks ago I was able to get a couple of them from my mechanic friend.

Was the original gasket in bad condition? I still have the original rubber gasket. Almost 50,000 miles. No leaks.

I still have the orginial gasket, but after 20 years in the Navy as an aircraft mechanic I'm in the habit of replacing gaskets and O-Rings when I take things apart and put them back together.

If we can't get to old style any more then I might as well go ahead and replace it. I bought 2 sets each of Primary inspection cover gasket, O-rings, derby o-Ring and Drain plug O-Ring plus one inspection cover and it only came to $36 so that's not bad. Since the dealer is quite a distance from the house I wanted to have a spare set so next trip around I have everything I need.
