Hello, New to the forum. Wife has a 2005 883 with the stock 'peanut' tank on it. Several of the people we ride with say that bigger tanks can be interchanged with the sportster tanks. We would like to do this, as to increase the ride sessions without worrying where the next station is. Can anyone tell me if this is true, and if so, what years and models have the tanks that interchange? Thanx in advance!

 

My 2004 R model came with the 3.3 gallon tank. I ordered to 4.5 gallon tank and installed it where the 3.3 gallon tank used to be with very little effort at all as it is a direct swap. However, you will need a seat that is for the 4.5 gallon application as well. This is because the larger tank is roughly 2" longer. So, you can take it to an upholsterer and have them cut it back or buy a seat as I did. The tanks for the C model from 2004 through 2006 will fit the bike you have. All you need do is paint to match or order straight from Harley in the correct color. Interestingly some folks actually like the smaller tank so you may found a swap mate out there somewhere.

Sure, all you need is a stock 1200C seat and a 4.5 gallon tank from a 2004 through 2006 model.
