Default RevTech 80W-90 In Sportster?

Anyone have any experience (or opinions) about using RevTech Semi-Synthetic 80W-90 transmission lube in the Sportster primary/tranny?

Guy I know gave me 4 quarts of this, and I'd hate to see it go to waste.

The bottle states, in part; "A multi-viscosity partial synthetic gear oil developed exclusively for use in the transmission of Harley Davidson Big Twin Motorcycles."

I know that many run the Mobil 1 tranny lube in their Sportster's, but I haven't heard much about the RevTech fluid. I haven't used RevTech products in the past, but apparently it is made for, and distributed by Custom Chrome.

Im not sure but I think that at least my 97 sporty takes 15w-50w in the tranny. So I would think that 80w-90 would be to thick but Im not an expert by any means.

Engine oils and gear oils are measured using different methods and scales. Here's a short list of the various viscosities comparing motor oil to gear oil.

10w thru mid range of 20w = 75w gear oil

Mid 20w thru mid 30w = 80w gear oil

Mid 30w thru low 40w = 85w gear oil

Low 40w thru 50w = 90w gear oil

60w up = 140w gear oil

I don't know about the newer Sporties, but the old Ironheads had a one-way transfer valve between the engine crankcase and the primary/transmission. Unless this was blocked off, you had to run the same oil in both cavities. And in the Sporty you need something that will lube the chain, lube the tranny gears, and allow for proper clutch operation. Your manual will tell you what the lube oil requirements are, so it'd be a good thing to follow.

The answer to your question is "Big Twin Motorcycles." Not the Sportster. Pass them on to a buddy with a "Big Twin."

Guess I'll hold off using it in my 1200C, but I also own a Dyna WideGlide. I normally run Mobil 1 75W-90 in the FXDWG tranny, but I might try the RevTech at the next 'fluid change' and see how it works.
