Start with small projects and take your time.
I have had to learn to fab stuff up as part of my trade.
Tools you acquire as you go along and your skills advance.
I worked for a company(9yrs)whose owners were big hot rodders in their spare time. The shop was well equipped and I got to do stuff for work as well as my own projects. It was a great place to learn and we all fed off of each others ideas. Some of the stuff created there is mind blowing and I got to witness it first hand. I miss being there sometimes but we're still good friends and I try to stop in one in awhile to see what's happenin'.
We had a saying "Two steps forward. One step back". Because when you're making something "custom" it doesn't always work out the way you envisioned it and you have to backtrack or start over.
So get your hands dirty, experience is the best teacher.
(Will try to post a couple pics so you understand what I'm going on about.)

Default why can't I buy one of these?!?

Holy hell ...
why can't I buy one of these?!?

Seriously this is wicked cool - and exactly what I need.
And apparently snidermire solved this back in 2009?!
Why can I not order this and have it overnighted to me?!

Wow.
Awesome.

Seriously I've read that for the Dynas Harley had (at one point anyway) a passenger pillon that attached to a rigid solo luggage rack.

Does anyone know of a passenger seat that would connect to the sportster equivalent and doesn't require fabrication skills?

Here's the closest think to the Dyna's rigid solo luggage rack that I could find for the sporty:

Even if it's not Harley brand - a solution like this would be awesome.
Any intell would be appreciated.

(and kudos snidermire - very very very cool)
