Default Chain drive for an 06 XL

I ride year round. Unfortunately municipalities use a very coarse sand as a traction aid. The sand destroys belts and pulleys. Does anyone no were to find a chain drive conversion for an 2006 XL1200?

Not being a smart *** here, but is an oily chain going to fair that much better if it gets loaded with sand? Just askin......

That is a good question. Because the chain is open on both sides, it expels the sand. The belt holds the sand and due to its soft nature, allows the particles to embed into the belt. I can buy chain from an industrial supplier, by the box (enough for 4 chains), for $150.

Not doubting your reasoning, but (chain) oil is like a magnet when it comes to dirt & sand. It just seems to me that the chain lube will quickly become a gritty/abrasive mess.

Again, I've never had to deal with running in a lot of sand on a street bike, just remembering the dirt bike days and the headaches that came with all the constant chain maintenance (cleaning & adjusting).

Good Luck

A chain is going to get eatten up at high rate also and it takes a bunch more maintenance and there is a never ending mess all over the rear of the bike from chain oil.
I run a chain on one of my bikes just for more tire clearance but that would be the only reason I would do other than a mega HP machine.
If you must have a chain call Zippers that's who I got mine from.

icecaps, thanks for the link. I might sound crazy (chain drive), but I'm planning to bump my displacement to 88" next fall.
