Maybe some new shocks too. They certainly made a difference for me.

i took my xlc on a 3000 mile trip with no worries. had a nice corbin seat with a rider backrest and a 4.5 gal tank...it was a great trip. i also had apes over my head and lowered shocks on it...i wouldn't suggest the apes.

As most have said, good seat very important! I have a 3.8 gallon tank and hit reserve around 175 miles. It is usually about time to take a break and stretch my legs.
Enjoy!

The AirHawk seat cushion is cheaper than a new seat. I have one and I like it. I also have a HD Sundowner seat on my 2007 XL883 and 500 + miles is a piece o cake for me on that seat. I rode my 1999 XL883 from CA to VA and back, about 6,000 miles round trip in about 9 days and I also took that same 1999 XL883 from CA to Sturgis, SD and back, about 4,000 miles round trip. Both trips were last year. The coast to coast trip was in June and the Sturgis trip was in August of course. I will turn 55 in about 2 weeks. Sportster Rule!

For God sakes, just do it. I had an 87' Sportster and rode that thing everywhere. 10 miles or 1000 miles, it didn't matter, that was before all the custom seats and what not. You do it for the adventure and love of riding. Just my 2 cents.

oh yeah do it! I have a pretty much stock 04 883 custom. We ride 2 up all the time and I am no small stuff. Did buy a sheep skin blanket for it 'cause I like the looks of them (old school) and it turns out they are comfy too. try these guys http://www.sickafus.com/shearling/sh...eatcovers.html
This year we will be touring New England/New York state and will be gone for at least 10 days, all on my sporty.

I would add two things that I don't go without. A good pair of shatterproof sunglasses/goggles in UV 400 or yellow tint and padded gloves. That's my two cents.

Ok, sounds like it's a very doable thing, then.
