Default DIY GPS mount/ Wiring question

Here is a simple way to make a handlebar mount GPS for all you cheap skates (Like myself). After doing some research, RAM mounts do not fit the Motorola GPS i have. All it takes is a PVC pipe T fitting, some pvc cement, and 2 hose clamps.

However, I am having problems with the wiring. It is hooked up by an all weather 12v accessory socket. It is wired directly to the battery with a switch and a 30 amp fuse on the positive wire. Everything seems to work well, but my bike will NOT run with the gps plugged in. I have a LED light system that works off of the 12v outlet, and the bike runs perfect with it.

Do i need a relay to reduce the amount of power the 12v outlet is using? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks, Shane

30amp fuse is way too big. I got an adapter from O'reilly's that has a cig. lighter on one end and the 2-pin SAE plug that fits the pigtail for the battery tender. The battery tender pigtail is fused with 7.5amp fuse. you could go up to a 15amp, but I would not go higher than that.

Did you use the cigarette lighter adapter that came with the GPS? The GPS that you are using uses a 5V power supply. The cigarette lighter adapter contains a regulator that steps down the 12V from the battery to the 5V required from the GPS. If you have wired the battery directly to the GPS then you may be doing harm to the GPS. It could also cause your bikes ECM to think that there is a fault.

Thanks for the replies, but it turns out to be an I.D.10.T. Error. First I changed the fuse to a 10 amp (smallest I had), and nothing. It is hooked up with the cigarette lighter adapter that came with the GPS. It turns out I grounded it to the bikes computer after the ignition switch. It didn't screw up anything though. I grounded it to the frame, and it works like it should now. Thanks again!
