2000 883 with 22K miles...what's the typical life?

I'm *this* close to becoming one of you and posting much more, but am concerned about a couple issues.


1). I'm looking at a 2000 883 with 22K miles on it. I think the price of $3400 is okay, but the mileage concerns me. It has new tires, owner claims regular servicing, etc....but is 22K for a 883 at all worrisome? I know a lot depends on how well it's been taken care of during those 22K miles...but just generally speaking, what are your thoughts?


2). I'm I’m 6’1”, and am finding a lot of the newer bikes riding awfully low, which I guess is the rage now. I haven’t ridden in a dozen or so years – my last bike was a V30 Magna that I sold in the mid-‘90s – and now having decided to get back in the game, am finding a lot of the new models ride low and long. I’ve discounted (I think) the Honda Shadow because of that…at least, from the pics I’ve seen, it appears that way. A few other models as well. I’ve read numerous posts about several models that warn folks above 5’10” to stay away from certain models…any problems in this regard w/ the 883 (or Harleys in general)? The owner says it's a "883XL" model, which he says means it sits slightly higher. True?


Thanks for any advice and tips. Like I said, I've been off bikes for about fifteen years, and have never owned a Harley...so it feels like my learning curve is pretty steep right now.

Btw, yes, I've been able to find 883s in my area with less miles, but the price on this one is good and, more importantly (though I'm a bit embarased to admit it since it's simply cosmetic), it's a beautiful deep orange color...and I love orange bikes. An orange Harley would be a terrific package.

22k is nothing, I got 75K+ on my 94 with no major issues. As for your height, that's another issue, only you can answer that. Many taller guys are fine as long as they do forward controls and different bars. And yes the standard 883 is regular height......the hugger model is the lowered version.

We have a lady in our local HOG chapter who has 145000 miles on her sporty all done by her! I'm looking forward to taking mine there and beyond with some regular service.

As long as the fit is ok, go for it!

I have a 2000 1200 with a little over 22k on it and she's running strong! If it has been well maintained, I would not sweat the mileage.

I forbid you to buy that bike......I'm the only one allowed to have that color :icon_playingball:. I kid, I kid.

Anyway, the two orangeish colors for '00 was one called Aztec Orange that actually looked more red, and then Bronze Pearl like mine:

This reminds me that I need to download all my other pictures to get some with bett er lighting and with all the mods that's been done.

Oh, and 22K miles for that '00 is fine.

I did the rebuild at 123k miles. I'm at ~149500 now. The link in my signature gives the service history. Don't fear mileage, fear the habbits of the previous owner.
