Exposed Filters and Rain....to all naysayers.
The missus and I put over 250 miles on Yesterday (Saturday). For over 50 of those miles we were in one hell of a nasty thunderstorm. Rain drops was the size of dimes. 2+ inches of rain run off filled the road with areas flooded with over 4+ inches of water some of it red with mud. We rode at a steady pace with the 4 way flashers on. The roost of water off the front tire mainly hit the top of my boots and shins depending on the speed we were traveling. I mean we were throwing some water. and the wind was at 40 mph so needless to say we ate a lot of roost. On the 4 lane roads we and the bike ate hundreds of gallons of water from cars driving next to us. We were soaked to the bone.
OH and the point is, my bike never missed a beat / Arlen Ness Big Sucker II.
PS: No rain sock, but I do have a leg cut off of danskin bicycle shorts covering the filter so it is black.

I have not had a Sportster-based bike in several years, but just for the sake of discussion here, I had a Buell at one time and had this friend and HD mechanic that was a crotch-rocket and Buell fan. He had done a good bit of research on the open filter performance. At very high speeds...the performance falls off due to the air flow across the filter disrupting the vacuum in the intake venturi. I know most of us don't fly down the road at over 100mph, but this guy told me the faster you went the narrower the field of vision became and at around 140....it seemed as if you were driving through a pipe. Well....I will never know, but I use to always cut off the inside half of my air cleaners to expose about 1/2 of the filter and I like the idea of doing that. I do it on my large frame bikes as well. NEVER had a problem with water either.
